Hemp clothes make sense

Hemp’s positive environmental influence

Hemp grows rapidly and requires little water and no pesticides or herbicides. Its deep roots anchor and aerate the soil in which it’s grown. Hemp produces more fiber per acre than trees, cotton or flax (linen).

Hemp is much kinder to the Earth than conventionally grown cotton. Like hemp, cotton is a natural fiber, but growing it accounts for a significant portion of the pesticides and insecticides sprayed on the world’s crops. Growing demand for hemp clothing

The Hemp Industries Association estimates that the North American retail market for hemp textiles and clothing  grew from 10% per year in 2003 to 75% in 2016. As hemp clothing becomes more mainstream, customers can choose it for health, environmental and aesthetic reasons. It’s a win-win for consumers and for the Earth!

Why Eco-fabrics

The weaving of hemp fabrics is one of the world’s oldest industries, and soon will be the only sustainable path left for our future. Our ancestors used hemp 10,000 years ago because of its extremely high fiber content and multiple uses. By planting hemp instead of cotton today, we can produce 250% more fiber on the same amount of land. Since hemp is resistant to insects and diseases, it requires no pesticides. By way of contrast, non-organic cotton growers are responsible for over 50% of world pesticide use. Since non-organic cotton is often rotated with certain food crops, toxic pesticides build up and find their way into our meals. Run-off from non-organic cotton fields further pollutes streams, lakes, and all the creatures that depend on them.

Aside from the myriad environmental reasons for supporting the growing hemp industry, one might also be persuaded by the fabric’s legendary strength. In fact, hemp is the most durable of natural fibers: 3 times more durable than cotton. The extended life of hemp means that if everyone wore it, we could reduce by one third the resources needed to clothe the planet.

Hemp cotton blends are both more absorbent and more mildew resistant than 100% cotton. Fabric made using 50% or higher of hemp will block more UV rays than non-hemp fabrics. Have you ever noticed that hemp-made garments don’t create static? That is because hemp has the same net static charge as human skin, resonating perfectly with our electromagnetic fields.

How to care for your hemp clothing

Hemp clothing is easy to care for and tolerates hot water temperatures well. (Wash cold to minimize impacts on the environment.) If your hemp garment has been preshrunk as has, a hot dryer will not harm it. Hemp clothing can be air dried quickly.

If you get a food or dirt stain on your hemp clothing, put some laundry soap on the spot and let it sit for a few minutes before washing. That is usually sufficient to remove the spot. Hemp doesn’t need dry cleaning. Depending upon its fabrication, your hemp clothing may need to be touched up with a hot iron. As the hemp grows softer with laundering and wear, ironing becomes less and less critical.(Wrinkles can usually be dealt with by simply spritzing them with water.)

What’s the Difference Between Hemp and Marijuana

Hemp and marijuana come from the same plant species, Cannabis sativa, but there are noted differences between the two plants, coming from different strands.

•  They both contain cannabidiol (CBD), which has medicinal properties. The amount of CBD however, differs greatly between the two. Dosing, therefore, is dramatically different when you  try to use hemp in lieu of cannabis for medicinal purposes
• Another difference that appears to matter in terms of its usefulness as medicine relates to different terpene profiles. (primary terpenes and terpenoids identified in hemp oil are limonene, myrcene, pinene, linalool, eucalyptol, γ-terpinene, β-caryophyllene, caryophyllene oxide, nerolidol and phytol) The wide array of medicinal properties of terpenes and the fact that each has many different medical benefits gives rise to the overlapping synergies between them; the strategy of deliberately overlapping benefits greatly increases the chances of good results in treatment.
• Lastly, there’s the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content. THC is the psychoactive component of marijuana; it’s the molecule that makes you feel “stoned.” Cannabidiol (CBD)  found in hemp has no psychoactive properties. It does NOT produce a high.) So to summarize:

• Hemp only contains CBD but  medicinal terpenes and flavonoids are still present. Hemp will NOT get you stoned (no narcotic psychoactive effect)

• Marijuana can act as a potent medicine courtesy of high amounts (about 10 to 20 percent) of CBD, critical levels of medicinal terpenes, and flavonoids, as well as THC in varying ratios for various diseases. The higher the THC, the more pronounced its psychoactive effects.

Hemp – Environmentally Friendly Alternative to Plastic

Hemp plastic is a “material of the future” that could drastically cut down on the need for plastics and their devastating toll on the environment.
